Crimson Soul eBook Tim Cody Reviews
Based on the redundant blurb I went into this book expecting...I'm not sure. Not much. Not what I got, that's for sure.
I was hooked within the first two pages by the author's writing style, which is clear and non-flowery but reveals bits of information and emotion slowly to build a sense of mystery and anticipation. While certain basic horror themes in the book are well-trod, the details and the incredibly endearing main characters lift this up into something original and completely engaging.
And here's my favorite part. When I read a story I really love I tend to picture it in my head if it were illustrations, a comic, or a movie. I did this throughout, but at one point I realized that it was also a video game. I really wanted to play, fully experience this story, these scenes. It reminded me of Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame Crimson Butterfly in all the best ways. Eventually, the inspiration of these games becomes more bluntly apparent, but again, with it's own flavor and originality. To put it this way, this story would work great as a sequel to either of those games.
Here's an explanation for those unfamiliar with that materiel
If you like character-driven horror with psychological elements this might be up your ally. If you have a kindle, it's only 99 cents and there's a free sample so there's really no reason not to give it a shot.
Anyway, I love this book. I've started the sequel and I'm already enthralled by it. I picked this up for a buck on kindle but now I plan to buy a stack of paperback copies to give to people as gifts. To me, this is a hidden gem.
Crimson Soul is a dark horror novel. If you enjoy that kind of novel then this is the book for you.
It is well written and easy to follow. It takes place in and around an insane asylum and follows the dreams (or nightmares) of two teenage girls who are seeking to save mankind.
The two-star rating is based solely on the fact that this is NOT my idea of reading enjoyment.
starts out pretty good but get's awful real fast. From the beginning you know she has to die because of the suicide pact for Bell Maidens and their bell servants (this one is far from being a maiden but is sexually abused by her parents and was even made to get an abortion.) All of the repeated death scenes and her view of death get annoying...
I would have given it only 1 star but the end with the colored butterflies was neat... so I gave it 2 stars

I thought it was an enjoyable read. I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought Crimson Soul, but suffice to say I was pleasantly surprised. The book is from a relatively new author but he managed to keep me hooked til the end. I found Crimson Soul to have a theme and atmosphere similar to the Fatal Frame or Silent Hill game series.
Kept me turning the page. Hard to put down.
Tim Cody does an amazing job of making the world of Crimson Soul easy to visualize and experience. That, coupled with a wonderful balance of tension, humor, and heart, made this a very enjoyable read. Looking forward to starting the sequel.
